Abstract
Transition-metal oxides often have coupled charge-spin-orbital degrees of freedom and hence display rich properties. In this talk, using crystal-field level diagrams and density functional calculations, we address (1) a record-breaking giant magnetic anisotropy for transition metal adatoms on MgO (001) surface, (2) unusual charge-spin state and strong ferromagnetism in the mixed perovskite SrFe0.5Ni0.5O3, (3) the contrasting magnetism of two new double perovskites Ca2FeOsO6 and Sr2NiIrO6, and (4) spin-orbit coupling driven antiferromagnetism in the Ising spin-chain oxide Sr3NiIrO6. In all these cases, orbital physics and magnetic interactions are discussed, and spin-orbital multiplet and electron correlations are handled by configuration-state constrained LSDA+U calculations.
