Abstract

The fast growing demand for safe and low-cost energy storage technologies with high power and energy densities drives the continuous improvement of rechargeable Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Developing in operando characterization is the potential way to understand the mechanism of battery in real working conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is very sensitive to the local environment and can powerfully serve as a non-destructive tool to follow the modification of electrodes upon cycling. In addition to spectral resolution, here we developed in operando NMR and in situ MRI to extend insight into spatial and temporal dimensions for working batteries. Complementely, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is employed to track the redox of transition metal and oxygen species for Li-rich electrodes. The developed methods can find wider applications in many fields, such as materials and catalyst.
