Prof. Takamitsu Yamanaka visits HPSTAR

Prof. Takamitsu Yamanaka, a professor in the Department of Earth and Space Science and Professor at the Center for Quantum Science and Technology under Extreme Conditions in Osaka University, visited HPSTAR from May 10 to Jun. 15, 2016. Prof. Yamanaka is Emeritus Professor of Osaka University, a Member of National Science Council of Japan belonging to Japanese cabinet since 2003, and President of International Mineralogical Association (IMA).

This is his second visiting of HPSTAR since November, 2015. During this visit, Takamitsu delivered a talk about neutron diffraction which is kind of new and an emerging technique for high-pressure science field.

First, Prof. Yamanaka introduced some basic differences between neutron and x-ray diffractions including advantage and applications of neutron diffraction in high-pressure science. Then he gave a brief introduction of the high pressure neutron diffraction facility at Beam Line 11 (PLANET) of the spallation neutron source facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) which is especially designed for the researches under the high-pressure and high-temperature.

He also talked about measurements of magnetic structure and Jahn-Teller effect at extreme conditions from neutron diffraction.
