Prof. Juri Grin visited HPSTAR

Prof. Juri Grin, a distinguished scientist in the field of intermetallic materials and a Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemische Physik, visited HPSTAR on May 25, 2016.

His work focusses on preparation of new intermetallic phases, the understanding of their crystal structures, their chemical and physical behavior, as well as on the development of the necessary experimental and theoretical methods. In this visit, Prof. Grin delivered a talk entitled “Atomic interactions in intermetallic compounds and their chemical and physical properties.”  In the talk, Juri firstly introduced some basic knowledge on chemical bonding, the definitionof intermetallic compounds, etc, in this new field.

He also talked about the great problems and challenges of inorganic chemistry.

“One great problem is structural chemistry which still awaits satisfactory solution is that of the structure of metals and intermetallic compounds,” Grin said. “Current progress in this field has not yet be great enough to permit confident predictions to be made about intermetallic composition, structure, and properties”.
