PI: Dr. Ross Howie

Dr. Ross Howie joined HPSTAR in September 2015. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh from 2013-2015 working in the group of Prof. Eugene Gregoryanz. He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 2013.

Dr. Howies research focuses on static compression experiments of molecular systems in the multi-megabar regime using optical spectroscopy as a diagnostic.

Research highlights include the discovery and characterization of hydrogen phase IV, the first solid phase of hydrogen to be discovered over the past 25 years. Recent experiments have pushed to record pressures in the conventional diamond anvil cell and characterized the behavior of hydrogen above 350 GPa.

In September 2015 Dr. Howie was awarded the Jamieson Award from the International Association for the Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT).
